The German forces came to Hemnskjel in May 1941 and stayed to the end of the war. Fortifications were built and cannons mounted.
Hemnskjel was important in defending the seaway to Trondheim, and it had 12 coastal batteries under its command. "Artillerigruppe Trondheim West" was responsible for defending the stretch from Kristiansund to Ørlandet.

Two coastal forts were established on the island, with 600-800 men. In addition, there was a prisoner of war camp with about 100 Russian prisoners.This album is mainly from Hemnskjel South. (Hevnskjöl Sud). Today there are still visible parts of the different positions. And it's worth a stop if one are going to Hitra.

HKB 2-983 Engenes var underlagt Artilleriegruppe Salangen. Dette hærkyst batteriet, ble anlagt i juni 1941. Albumet inneholder bilder fra selve byggingen og utplasseringen av skytset. Dette skytset er muligens polske 15,5 cm haubitsere. I 1942 ble det gjort omvepning av skytset. Det bl da utstyrt med 6 15 cm kanoner. (K403)
